Why Repair Costs Sometimes Change
A vehicle repair estimate is prepared using the information available at a particular stage of the repair process.
The final cost may change as the vehicle is dismantled, parts are confirmed, manufacturer requirements are reviewed and the complete repair operation becomes known.
This publication explains the common reasons for cost movement and the evidence that should support a revised repair figure.
An Estimate Reflects a Point in Time
An initial repair estimate records the work that can reasonably be identified from the information available when it is prepared.
Before dismantling, the estimator may not be able to inspect concealed structures, internal mounting points, wiring, electronic components or the condition of parts intended for reuse.
As further information becomes available, the repair scope may need to be revised. This does not make every increase reasonable, but it does mean that the initial estimate and final repair cost will not always be identical.
Any material change should be explained by the additional condition, requirement or cost that caused it.
Common Reasons Repair Costs Change
Repair costs may move for several legitimate reasons, including:
• Hidden damage identified after dismantling
• A change from repair to replacement, or replacement to repair
• Additional manufacturer-required operations
• Parts price changes, superseded parts or unavailable components
• Previously damaged components that cannot be safely reused
• Additional refinishing, corrosion protection or material requirements
• Diagnostic scanning, programming, system initialisation or calibration
• Specialist mechanical, electrical, glass or structural work
• Additional labour required to gain access or complete the repair correctly
• Changes to repair timing, storage or associated service requirements
Each change should be connected to the repair being undertaken and supported by appropriate information.
Parts Affect More Than the Purchase Price
The cost of a replacement component may change because of supplier pricing, availability, freight, superseded part numbers or the type of part ultimately approved and supplied.
A component may also require associated brackets, clips, seals, fasteners, wiring or one-time-use items that were not identifiable in the initial parts enquiry.
Substituting an original, recycled, reconditioned or alternative part can affect fit, preparation time, refinishing, programming and the work required to achieve an appropriate result.
The relevant comparison is therefore the complete installed cost and suitability of the available part—not its purchase price alone.

These operations should be identified and supported where relevant. Although they may not produce a visible replacement part, they can be necessary to restore the affected vehicle systems and confirm correct operation.
What Should Support a Revised Cost?
A revised repair figure should be capable of being traced back to the reason for the change.
Supporting information may include:
• An updated estimate clearly identifying added, removed or amended operations
• Photographs of newly identified damage
• Dismantling or measurement records
• Current parts quotations and availability information
• Manufacturer repair procedures
• Diagnostic scan results and calibration requirements
• Specialist or sublet quotations
• Repairer notes explaining additional labour or access requirements
• Records of supplementary assessment and authority
Clear documentation allows the revised cost to be reviewed on its merits and distinguishes a supported change from an unexplained increase.

Its purpose is not simply to determine whether the final figure is higher or lower. It is to establish whether the repair scope is technically appropriate, whether the cost movement can be traced to supporting evidence and whether any remaining uncertainty has been clearly identified.
Where repair work has progressed beyond the point at which an item can be inspected, that limitation should form part of the assessment.
